Municipal Communities

The City of Athens is divided into seven (7) Municipal Communities, each of which has the following responsibilities:

Organizing and operating Citizen Service Points (Σ.Ε.Δ.), one in each Division, which serve as the interface between citizens and municipal services.
Informing and advising citizens about the steps required to handle their affairs.
Issuing family status certificates, certificates of permanent residence, and authentication of signatures, as well as performing document certifications.
Receiving citizens’ applications, checking for completeness, and forwarding them to the competent services for processing.
Preparing the agenda of the Municipal Community Council.
Keeping minutes of meetings, coordinating and taking care of work related to solving problems in the Community.
Accepting written or oral submissions from citizens concerning issues of the Municipal Community and ensuring their referral to the competent municipal services.
Cooperating with relevant municipal services on matters concerning the Community’s areas.
In cooperation with the President, Vice-President, and members of the Municipal Community Council, promoting, advancing, and where possible implementing policies aimed at improving the quality of life of residents.
Collaborating with the Municipal Education Committee and the Local Crime Prevention Council on matters related to their activities.
Deciding on the pre-approval of establishment or installation of shops, businesses, and other activities, in accordance with applicable legislation.
Deciding on the granting of music operation licenses to health-related businesses (cafés, restaurants, etc.).
Deciding on the relocation of kiosks.
Proposing and recommending, where appropriate, the locations of open-air markets, street vendors, and other outdoor commercial activities.
Making proposals concerning:
a. The utilization of municipal properties within the Community’s area of responsibility
b. The urban development of the area
c. The maintenance of municipal roads, squares, and groves
d. Local transportation
e. The execution of new works and the maintenance of completed projects
f. The protection of the natural and cultural environment
g. The collection and care of stray animals
h. The organization of cultural events and, more broadly, the development of intellectual and social activities
