Art Gallery – Metaxourgeio (Buildings A & B)
The building of the City of Athens Art Gallery in Metaxourgeio is one of the oldest neoclassical buildings in Athens, designed by the Danish architect Christian Hansen. It operated as a silk factory until 1875, and its presence gave the wider area its name, “Metaxourgeio” (Silk Factory).
In 2007, the City of Athens began restoration works in order to transform the old factory into a cultural venue. Since 2010, it has functioned as the Art Gallery.
Exhibitions are presented in its halls according to the annual program.

Art Gallery – Peiraios Street
This building, designed by the architect Panagiotis Kalkos and completed in 1875, operated as an Infant Orphanage until 1977. It is a typical example of the neoclassical architectural style that prevailed in public and urban architecture from the establishment of the modern Greek state until the early decades of the 20th century. The Municipality of Athens began forming its art collection in 1923, with the first acquisition being the sculpture The Fisherman by D. Filippotis.
Today, the Municipal Art Gallery houses more than 3,400 works of painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Nearly all of the most important Greek artists of the 20th century are represented with significant works. The collection also includes notable printmaking works by the great masters and their contemporary successors.
