Deputy Mayors & Responsibilities
The Mayor is assisted by Deputy Mayors. Deputy Mayors are municipal councillors of the majority and are appointed by decision of the Mayor. The number of Deputy Mayors for each municipality is determined by population. In larger municipalities such as the Municipality of Athens, the number of Deputy Mayors is usually equal to the number of municipal communities (districts) and can be increased by 3 with a decision of the Municipal Council, as happened in the Municipality of Athens.
Deputy Mayors are appointed by decision of the Mayor, and responsibilities are delegated to them as a whole or in part according to the area. The term of Deputy Mayors cannot be less than two years.
If a Deputy Mayor is absent or unable to perform their duties, their responsibilities are assumed by another Deputy Mayor as designated by the Mayor or by the Mayor personally.
