Issuance of Civil Marriage License

Useful Information about the Procedure:

The Civil Marriages Department serves permanent residents of the City of Athens—Greek citizens, foreigners, and refugees—as well as Greek citizens residing abroad who are registered in the City of Athens, for the issuance of a civil marriage license.

If you schedule an appointment for this service, please note the following:

The applicant must appear in person with their identity card in order to submit the required documents for the marriage license.

The marriage license may be collected by a third party with the submission of a proper authorization.

Online submission of an application and required documents for the issuance of a civil marriage license (applies only to Greek citizens residing in the City of Athens when the marriage is to be conducted in Greece) may be carried out via the Municipality of Athens platform eservices.cityofathens.gr following these steps:

The marriage license is issued seven (7) days after the submission and verification of the required documents and is valid for six (6) months.

ATTENTION: All submitted documents must be recent (issued within the last six months).

Required Documents

Documents for the Issuance of a Civil Marriage License for Greek Citizens – Residents of the City of Athens

  1. Application (provided by the Municipality)
  2. Solemn Declaration under Law 1599/86 in which the prospective spouse declares that: a) there are no impediments to marriage according to articles 1350, 1351, 1352, 1354, 1356, 1357, and 1360 of the Civil Code b) their marital status, and c) their residence address in the City of Athens (provided by the Municipality).
  3. Birth Certificate from the Registry Office of their place of birth.
    Greeks born abroad must apply to the Special Registry (Evangelistrias 2, Athens).
    Attention: If no official (Greek) birth certificate exists, a municipal registry certificate of registration indicating the date and year of birth must be submitted.
  4. For divorced: Registry Record of the previous marriage indicating its dissolution (issued by the Registry Office of the Municipality where the marriage took place).
  5. For those who had a civil partnership: Registry Record of the Civil Partnership indicating its dissolution (issued by the Registry Office of the Municipality where the partnership was registered).
  6. For widows/widowers: Death Certificate.
  7. Copy of identity card
  8. Proof of residence in the applicant’s name, tax statement or recent bill for electricity, telephone, water etc. from the last six months.
  9. Marriage announcement in a daily Athenian newspaper (one copy for each prospective spouse), stating accurately the full names of the couple, the full names of their parents, place of birth, last place of residence and the Municipality where the marriage will take place. (If one of the prospective spouses is a foreign national, the information must also be printed in Latin characters).
  10. Birth certificate of the future spouse and copy of identity card or passport (If the future spouse is a foreign national, the birth certificate from their country must be an original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).

Documents for the Issuance of a Civil Marriage License for Foreign Residents of the City of Athens

  1. Application (provided by the Municipality)
  2. Marriage License from their home country (if issued). The license must bear an Apostille stamp (for countries that have signed the Hague Convention) or be certified by the Greek Consular Authorities in their country, or by their Embassy in Greece (with verification of the Ambassador’s signature by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
    OR
    Certificate
    of No Impediment from their country or Embassy in Greece (officially authenticated and translated into Greek).
  3. Birth Certificate from their home country (original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).
  4. Marriage announcement in a daily Athenian newspaper (as above).
  5. tax statement or utility bill from the last six months.
  6. Copy of passport, residence permit, or other residence documents
  7. For widows/widowers: Death Certificate (original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).
  8. Divorce Certificate stating surname before and after marriage (original or certified copy, authenticated and translated into Greek).
    OR
    Certificate από from their home country (issued within the last three months) stating marital status (original or certified copy, authenticated and translated into Greek).
  9. Birth certificate and copy of identity card or passport of the future spouse (If the future spouse is a foreign national, the birth certificate from their country must be an original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).

Documents for the Issuance of a Civil Marriage License for Greek Citizens Residing Abroad (permanently or temporarily) who are Citizens of Athens

  1. Application (provided by the local Greek Consular Authority).
  2. mn Declaration under Law 1599/86, in which the prospective spouse declares that: a) there are no impediments to marriage according to articles 1350, 1351, 1352, 1354, 1356, 1357, and 1360 of the Civil Code b) their marital status, and c) their residence address.
  3. Authorization to a third party who will submit the documents and collect the marriage license.
    (All three (3) of the above documents must have signatures certified by the local Greek Consulate).
  4. Birth Certificate from the Municipality of Athens.
  5. Birth Certificate from the Registry Office of the place of birth.
    Greeks born abroad must apply to the Special Registry (Evangelistrias 2, Athens).
    Attention: If no official (Greek) birth certificate exists, a municipal registry certificate of registration indicating the date and year of birth must be submitted.
  6. For divorced: Registry Record of the previous marriage indicating its dissolution
    (issued by the Registry Office of the Municipality where the marriage took place).
  7. For those who had a civil partnership: Registry Record of the Civil Partnership indicating its dissolution (issued by the Registry Office of the Municipality where the partnership was registered).

  10. Marriage announcement in a daily Athenian newspaper (as above).
  11. Birth certificate of the future spouse and copy of identity card or passport
    (If the future spouse is a foreign national, the birth certificate from their country must be an original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).

Documents for the Issuance of a Civil Marriage License for Refugees – Residents of the City of Athens

  1. Application (provided by the Municipality)
  2. Solemn Declaration under Law 1599/86, in which the prospective spouse declares that: a) there are no impediments to marriage according to articles 1350, 1351, 1352, 1354, 1356, 1357, and 1360 of the Civil Code, b) their marital status, and c) their residence address in the City of Athens (provided by the Municipality).
  3. Proof of status as a political refugee (relevant decision by Greek Authority).
  4. Birth Certificate (if available).
  5. Marriage announcement in a daily Athenian newspaper (as above),(information must be printed in both Greek and Latin characters).
  6. Travel document issued by Greece (original and copy).
  7. Proof of residence in the applicant’s name, tax statement or or utility bill from the last six months.
  8. Birth certificate of the future spouse and copy of identity card or passport (If the future spouse is a foreign national, the birth certificate from their country must be an original or certified copy, officially authenticated and translated into Greek).
