Project Title:
Inclusion of the Project “Actions to Enhance and Promote Green Spaces in the Municipality of Athens” with OPS Code 6038298 in the “Attica 2021–2027” Programme
Project Summary:
Within the framework of policies aimed at strengthening green infrastructure and improving bioclimatic indicators, the Directorate of Green Spaces and Urban Fauna has designed redevelopment works for green areas across all municipal communities. The project represents a comprehensive effort to reconstruct green spaces and tree-lined streets throughout Athens.
Key interventions include:
-
Excavation or tilling of soft soil areas (squares, traffic islands, planting beds), soil improvement, and surface preparation for planting or lawn installation.
-
Installation of irrigation networks with pop-up sprinklers and drip systems.
-
Planting of category D7 trees in public squares.
-
Installation of clusters of perennial plants, grasses, and flowering shrubs.
-
Creation of seasonal flower beds.
-
Installation of pre-grown turf.
-
Supporting works such as fencing and paving.
Environmentally friendly materials—natural or artificial—will be selected to minimize heat and light reflection, reduce surface temperatures, and create a favorable microclimate. Planting layouts will be carefully designed based on orientation and prevailing seasonal winds to maximize shading while also functioning as windbreaks.
In line with European environmental directives and the municipality’s due diligence obligations, Athens is responsible for limiting environmental risks and restoring the urban environment.
Additionally, replacing outdated municipal restroom facilities is considered necessary due to age, extensive wear, and obsolete design. New facilities will meet modern safety and hygiene standards—particularly important for spaces used by children—while improving aesthetics and contributing to a better urban environment and daily experience for residents and visitors.
The project includes removal and transport of old, non-functional restrooms; procurement of modern, self-cleaning WC units; and their installation with connections to sewage and power networks.
