The construction of the new Panathinaikos stadium in Votanikos is part of one of the largest and most ambitious urban interventions currently being implemented in the capital. The project is expected to radically transform the Votanikos area, creating a modern urban hub that integrates sports, culture, green spaces, and economic activity.
Panathinaikos Athletic Club, one of the most historic sports clubs in Greece, was founded on February 3, 1908, and constitutes an integral part of Athens’ athletic and social history. Today, the city is moving forward with a project of pivotal importance, linking its sporting heritage with contemporary urban development.
Construction works on the new football stadium are progressing at a rapid pace, with completion targeted for May 2027. The project is being carried out by the TERNA – MYTILINEOS – AKTOR consortium, while full funding has been secured through the Public Investment Programme.
The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated: “We are creating a new green lung in Votanikos, together with Panathinaikos’ two stadiums — the football stadium and the amateur sports facilities. It will be one and a half times larger than the National Garden and will include ten rain gardens, through which rainwater will be redirected. I would like to warmly thank all municipal services and the competent bodies that contributed decisively to achieving immediate results within a particularly short timeframe. This is a commitment we undertook and are implementing without deviation.”
