The City of Athens has seven (7) Municipal Districts each of which has the following duties:
- To organize and operate Citizen Service Points (SED) for each Department acting as a contact point between citizens and City services;
- To inform citizens about the actions required in order to process their requests;
- To issue family status certificates and residence certificates, and to authenticate signatures; To authenticate documents;
- To receive applications from citizens, check that they are complete, and forward them to the competent departments for processing;
- To set out the agenda for Municipal District Council meetings;
- To take minutes at the meetings, and coordinate activities for solving any problems arising in the District;
- To take delivery of any written or oral reports by citizens, regarding matters pertinent to the Municipal District, and forward these to the relevant departments;
- To cooperate with the competent departments on matters relating to areas of the District;
- To cooperate with the Chair, Vice-chair and members of the Municipal District Council, in order to promote and – where possible – implement policies aimed at improving the quality of life of inhabitants;
- To cooperate with the Municipal Education Committee and the Local Crime Prevention Council, on matters relating to their competences;
- To decide on preliminary approvals for the establishment or installation of stores, businesses and other activities, according to applicable legislation;
- To decide on whether to issue Music Permits to restaurants, bars, etc.;
- To decide on the relocation of kiosks;
- To make proposals on premises for open-air markets, positions for outdoor static merchants, and outdoor commercial activities in general;
- To submit proposals on:
a. Use of City properties in their area of competence;
b. Planning development of the area;
c. Maintenance of municipal streets, squares & groves;
d. Local transport;
e. The execution of new works and the maintenance of existing works;
f. Protection of the natural and cultural environment;
g. Protection and accommodation of stray animals;
h. Organization of cultural events, and the development of spiritual and social activities in general.
