The Mayor is assisted by Deputy Mayors. The Deputy Mayors are City Council members from the majority party, and are appointed by the Mayor. The number of Deputy Mayors for each municipality is proportionate to its population. In larger municipalities, such as the City of Athens, the number of Deputy Mayors is equal to the number of municipal communities (districts) and may be increased by 3 by decision of the City Council, as is the case in the City of Athens.
The Mayor’s decision appointing Deputy Mayors also specifies their competences and jurisdiction. Deputy Mayors serve for no less than two and a half years.
Should a Deputy Mayor be absent or prevented from performing their duties, they may be replaced by another Deputy Mayor, appointed by the Mayor, or by the Mayor themselves.
